🌙 What Is Spiritualism?

Spiritualism is the belief that the soul survives physical death, and that the living can communicate with spirits in the afterlife through mediums or spiritual channels.

It’s not just about séances and table tipping — at its core, Spiritualism is about:

  • Healing grief

  • Expanding consciousness

  • Honoring personal spiritual experiences

  • Trusting in life beyond this one

It’s both a spiritual practice and, for many, a formal religion rooted in the idea that Spirit is ever-present and ever-loving.

🕯️ The Birthplace: Hydesville, New York, 1848

Spiritualism’s “official” history begins in a small farmhouse in Hydesville, NY, with two sisters: Margaret and Kate Fox.

One cold March evening, the Fox family began hearing mysterious rapping noises on the walls and furniture. Young Kate, then just 11, decided to talk to the sounds.

To the family’s shock, the raps responded. A simple code was developed: one knock for yes, two for no. Through this, they “spoke” with the spirit of a man believed to have been murdered in the home.

Word spread like wildfire.

Soon, the Fox sisters were touring cities, conducting public séances, and making headlines — unintentionally birthing the Spiritualist Movement.

📣 A Movement Takes Hold

By the 1850s, Spiritualism had exploded across the U.S. and U.K., drawing in:

  • Grieving families seeking comfort after the Civil War

  • Free thinkers and intellectuals

  • Women who saw it as a path to empowerment (many early mediums were women!)

  • Seekers looking for proof of the afterlife beyond dogma

Famous figures like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (creator of Sherlock Holmes), Mary Todd Lincoln, and Queen Victoria all explored or endorsed Spiritualist ideas.

Spiritualist churches began to form, merging Christian-style worship with mediumship, healing, and psychic development.

🌀 Core Beliefs of Spiritualism

While individual beliefs vary, most Spiritualists embrace these principles:

  1. Infinite intelligence is the source of all life (often called Spirit or Source).

  2. The soul continues to exist after death.

  3. It is possible to communicate with those in spirit.

  4. All souls are progressing toward perfection.

  5. Personal responsibility, love, and service are central to spiritual evolution.

Spiritualism is often more about experience than doctrine. It invites you to discover truth through your own connection with Spirit.

🧝‍♀️ Mediums, Séances, and Sacred Circles

Spiritualism is most famous for its mediumship practices — both public and private.

These include:

  • Trance mediumship (allowing Spirit to speak through a medium)

  • Mental mediumship (receiving messages through clairvoyance, clairaudience, etc.)

  • Physical mediumship (manifestations like table tipping, raps, or ectoplasm in rare cases)

  • Healing circles and development groups to grow psychic gifts

While the early 20th century brought skepticism and fraud exposés, many genuine mediums — including those working today — continue to serve with integrity, healing, and deep reverence for Spirit.

🌟 Why Spiritualism Still Matters Today

Spiritualism isn’t just a dusty chapter in metaphysical history. It’s alive — evolving — and woven into today’s spiritual awakening.

You see it in:

  • The rise of modern mediumship

  • Intuitive coaching

  • Energy healing

  • Shamanic journeying

  • The soul-deep hunger to know: What happens after we die?

Spiritualism reminds us that death is not the end. That Spirit is always close. And that we are never truly alone.

✨ Final Thoughts

Whether you sit in circle with a spirit guide, pull a card for a friend, or simply whisper to your ancestors at night, you are part of a lineage — one built on faith, connection, and the sacred act of listening.

Spiritualism opened a door. And that door is still open.

Step through it.Spirit is waiting.
